A Master's in Waitressing.

I've just graduated with my Master's in Social Work and am waiting to be approved to take the licensing exam in my state. Getting a job without a license is veeeery difficult. Also difficult: paying my bills when I have no income. I know opportunities will present themselves once I'm licensed but...any ideas as to what I can do to make money for a few months in the interim? So far it's babysitting and the food service industry... but is there anything even slightly social service-related I can do part-time? Or just easy, temporary gigs? Get rich quick schemes? Thanks all!

Look and see if there are any temp agencies in your area that specialize in or at least work with social service organizations?

Group homes often need night staff etc. that are good with troubled teens or adults.

The non-profits that I am familiar with are accepting people who have not gotten their license yet and having a hard time finding qualified apps. A lot of the jobs only require a bachelors.

Also most of the government social service jobs have such a high-burn out and low pay rate that they are constantly hiring. Some in Oregon are actually paying for peoples schooling.

If neither of these work, then the group home is usually hiring as well. I guess it depends on the area.

Home care assistant. Helping old ladies get out of bed in the morning / doing shopping for people who can't get out of the house themselves / making dinner for someone who's too shaky to handle sharp things or hot things safely / helping the old ladies back in to bed again. Probably helps to have your own transport. Lots of crappy agency jobs out there, and some good ones. Good experience for seeing how people live who are users of social services.

There are tons of social service jobs that require masters but do not require license. Start applying for those until you get licensed. At my workplace about half the MSWs do not have their licenses yet.

You could do administrative work in the offices of social service agencies or other non-profits. It would be a good way to get an overview of how those places work. I have an MSW and never got my license because I had no desire to do direct practice. I started out as an AA to a fundraising director and have now spent 10 years in the field. As a mid-level manager, I make much more money that my former classmates doing more traditional social work, I still get to work for causes that are important to me, and I actually really like my job.

See if your local Mental Health Center is hiring PRN technicians. It won't require licensure. I know a lot of people who did that so they would have one foot in the door when better positions opened up.
