help me find a book about football

Help me find this book filter: juvenile fiction, chapter book, about an inner city African American kid who is trying to join a football team in order to emulate his hero, a professional football player.
The kid's name may be Rufus. The cover was red, and the publishers imprint represented an open book. It was purchased through one of those school book orders, in the early 1980's.
I know this is a vague description, but am hoping someone out there knows what book this is.

I was wondering if it was one of those Matt Christopher kids' sports stories, but none of the synopses I read seemed to match.

Melismata has it. Definitely Durango Street. I also acquired it from one of those school book orders in the late 70's / early 80's. I vividly remember a scene in which some members of one of the street gangs (the Moors?) packed cut-off lengths of garden hose with wets sand to use in a fight with a rival gang. It sounded brutal at the time, but in retrospect seems almost quaint.

As did I! :) Man, as an avid reader, getting those school book order thingies was like Christmas every time.
