Unlock iphone 3G with firmware 3.1.3 or downgrade to 3.1.2?

My brothers iphone 3G got locked. It has firmware 3.1.3. Can it be unlocked, or do I need to downgrade to 3.1.2? Am I stuck with the problem that it can never be unlocked now? Any suggestions and steps to fix this?

It depends on the bootrom version. Currently you can unlock 3.1.3 using Spirit but there is not an unlock for 3.1.3 available. If he has the old bootrom, he can potentially downgrade to 3.1.2 and unlock but otherwise he's out of luck for now to the best of my knowledge.

Actually the SPIRIT mentioned above is for Jailbreak only. I'm pretty sure that it does not "unlock" the phone.

The last I heard was that the unlocking will have to wait until OS4.

Of course this changes daily.

Shoot, I meant jailbreak where I said unlock. Otherwise my second sentence doesn't make sense.
