Foxit Reader is another Adobe reader without the bloat.
Avast! is a great anti-virus program and seems to run more smoothly than AVG, which is the other major free anti-virus program.
OpenOffice sure beats paying hundreds of dollars for Microsoft's office productivity suite.
The GIMP, once you learn how to use it, does pretty much everything I'd ever need to use Photoshop for, but is free.
And of course there's Firefox; there are a million reasons to love Firefox, but honestly, I just really like the fox on their logo (and their unofficial Japanese mascot is even more adorable).
