Construction accident: real or imagined?
I have a vivid recollection of witnessing the aftermath of a construction accident when I was young. I attended a school near the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. during the mid-1970s. At one point, the city widened a portion of Wisconsin Avenue (northbound) in front of the school to accommodate a larger bus dropoff.
Here's where it gets murky: I remember there being an accident where a backhoe accidentally struck a water main, and the site was flooded. At least one of the construction workers was killed.
I've searched the internet and the Washington Post archives to no avail. Does anybody remember this? What other resources are out there to help confirm or deny this happening?

Contact the water department -- or the historical society.
