Things to do in the Mexican Riviera

My wife and I are planning to take a Mexican Riviera cruise (Carnival). The three stops are Acapulco, Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, and Manzanillo. We know nothing about this area and are looking for ideas for things to do.

We'll be at each port for 8 hours or so during the day and most of the evening for the Acapulco stop. We're most interested in scenery, nature, snorkeling, restaurants, and maybe a bit of souvenir shopping.

We are not the partying sort and may have our friends and their young children with us. We can speak enough Spanish to get by. We are not super-athletic but wouldn't mind hiking a mile or three.

You can look at Carnival's list of overpriced excursions here - feel free to suggest any of those, or preferably things we can do ourselves that are a short taxi/bus/boat ride from the port.

Any ideas? Things we shouldn't miss? Tips for getting the most out of an altogether too short visit?

Thanks!

Best answer: The ports all have restaurants and souvenir shopping nearby with free shuttles to get you there (if its even requires a shuttle). I went on a cruise to the Bahamas with Carnival and did a snorkeling excursion which was fun, I would do the Carnival Captain's Choice Snorkeling Adventure excursion package. Another fun thing to do is rent a scooter at one of the ports and ride around exploring on your own. You can ask locals how to get to the beach, park the scooter, and swim / relax.

Best answer: I live in Colima. Check out Susan Dearing's Go Manzanillo website for information about Manzanillo. You'll probably be particularly interested in the tours offered on the Eco Adventures page. Hope you have a great trip!

Response by poster: Thanks! We had a great trip.

In Acapulco, we just explored a bit, watched the cliff divers, and ate Mexican food.

In Zihuatanejo, we took a water taxi to Playa Las Gatas for some great snorkeling and more food. The kids loved it.

In Manzanillo, we took a tour that took us around Colima and Comala, saw the ruins and watched the volcano erupt. Awesome!

toodles, you're lucky, Colima is an amazing place. It's first on my list next time we go to Mexico.
