"EEEEEEEE" Make it stop!

We have a Sharp Aquos (LC-13S1U-W) LCD TV that has started making a very high pitch whine over the audio when you first turn it on. Do we need a new TV or can/should we fix this?

If you make an "eeeee" sound in the highest part of your voice range, that's what it sounds like. If you mute the sound, you also mute the whine. After the TV warms up (maybe 30 minutes?) the whine stops and the normal audio remains. Any advice on how we can reverse this condition?

If it were a CRT, I'd say it was the flyback transformer, but I don't know if they're used in LCD TVs.

This sounds like a problem with the audio processor circuit. Probably crosstalk from a digital clock (or more likely a video sync signal, since they're in the audio band) getting into the low-level analog audio and then being amplified to annoying levels. 30 minutes of warmup to make it go away seems like a long time, though. If it's under warranty I'd take it back for repair.

I don't know how to fix your TV, but perhaps it might make sense to get some external speakers? If you plug external speakers into your TV and run the audio through them, you could then avoid using the TV's built-in speakers, and thus avoid the whine. Depending on what kind of experience you're looking for, a basic speaker set might be cheaper than paying for repairs (assuming your TV's not under warranty).
