Augmented reality geocaching on Google Street View

Can you superimpose your own created layers (kml) onto Google Street View for purposes of combining geocaching with augmented reality (would be nice to have floating icons appear during a GPS enabled scavenger hunt)

I don't have a clue how to do what you're looking to do, but have you checked out Geocaching.com? I used to be a paid member there and recall that they used Google maps to create geocaching maps, complete with icons and such floating about.

Of course, now I realize that you might mean floating icons for teams on the move... hmm... good luck finding a way to do this and sorry I can't be of more help.

By which I mean, you can put .kml layers in google earth, in case that wasn't clear.

Best answer: I think Layar is what you're looking for. Android + iPhone. They have an API for doing what you want.

Best answer: I can't find anything saying that street view is KML-compatible, but this demo of overlaying photos on street view.

Response by poster: mkultra, Layar would be a great way to do it, but I don't have any programming experience for the API. I need a drag and drop interface like Google.

I'm curious Mike1024, how do you post the panoramio photos on street view? a layer?

Thanks everyone for the answers so far, I realize this is a very new field for a lot of people (myself included) but I expect this to BOOM in usage with some of the apps coming out and am just wanting to create a scavenger hunt where the user finds the clue with their cameraphone (preferably when they get up to it, not when they are 5 miles away.)

Response by poster: mkultra, I checked into the API. Instructions are posted at:
http://layar.pbworks.com/Steps-to-create-a-layer

Unfortunately, Layar is not available yet for the Droid (supposed to be in a couple weeks.) When it goes live, I think I will check out the API more. It sounds like all the steps take place on a form. I always thought APIs required a lot of coding from the top of your head. I never knew there were forms! I hope it really is that easy, I'll see in a couple weeks I hope!

I'll post on here how that goes.

Thanks!
