What movie is this?

Help me find the name of this fantasy or scifi movie I saw as a child.

It was a color film made before 1975 (probably well before then), and involved a teenage boy wandering around in a meadow. I remember only one scene from it, in which the boy is desperately repeating "I won't eat the flowers!" and then succumbs to a dreamlike state. I was born in 1967 and I'm pretty sure I was no older than eight when I saw this film. At the time I lived in the Detroit area. The boy in the movie was probably about 12 or 13 and had an American (maybe Canadian) accent.

Response by poster: Forgot to add that I saw this movie on TV, not in a cinema.

All Summer in a Day was broadcast in 1982 which doesn't fit the OP's timeline...

Definitely not All Summer in a Day based on the storyline either. Protagonist there was a girl.

A boy and his dog?

Hey, it looks like the short story version of A Boy and His Dog is something I read as a teenager and wished I could remember the name of. (For a while I had it confused with The Postman.) Thanks veedubya!

If it is indeed a Boy and His Dog, that movie is in the public domain now and is watchable online here.

Just watched the movie at the link crazyray gave; doesn't include the scene the OP remembered, unfortunately.

The flowers must've been poppies. This too sounds familiar.

Response by poster: I think I-baLL is right that they were poppies. But I have seen the other two mentioned and it's not either of them.
