Children's book

NPR's story about Dare Wright's Lonely Doll books triggered a memory of a similar series I read as a child [come in for details]

The books uses the same technique as Wright's books: photos of toys in detailed poses. The books I am thinking of featured a small teddy bear. The pictures were in color, and the bear often was outside (one strong memory is the bear standing on a mushroom, looking at or for something).

The other feature of the books is there weren't any words - a child "reading" the book would be able to make up the story based on the pictures.

That's all I've got. Trigger anything for you?

Paddington immediately popped in my head, but those had words. Around what years did you read it?

Response by poster: Definately not Paddinton.

I was probably four or five; we got the books from the library. That would be mid 1070's.

Response by poster: also, the bear looked like a Steiff Bear with articulated arms and legs. I believe it was not clothed.

Best answer: "Alfred the Little Bear" by Bill Binzen.

...although that had words. But maybe you're remembering incorrectly, because what you're describing sounds a lot like Alfred, aside from the bit about the words. Here's one of the photographs: http://www.intuart.com/billbinzen/Alfred/9mushroom.jpg

Oh, even better - apparently that site has the whole book online: http://www.intuart.com/billbinzen/Alfred/alfred0.html

Response by poster: All right, Alfred looks like a winner. Thanks bubakaba!

I wonder if I'm just not remembering the word part of the book because I was a pre-reader when we would check them out. Wacky thing, memory.

The mushroom picture you linked to is exactly what I remember.
