Basic Video-Editing Program for HD

Recommend a good (VERY BASIC!) video editing program I can use at work. (Must support HD video and work in Windows XP!)

I'm the IT manager here for my company. I have a user who has taken HD video with a Sony Handycam (HDR-CX520V, .mts file types) who has a need to do some light editing.

She really only needs to do some light trimming of the files and perhaps joining a few together etc.

We run Windows XP SP3, and Windows Movie Maker does not support HD files as far as I know. Vista's Movie Maker HD does, but no access to that. Can anyone out there recommend a great (free is preferable I don't need to buy Sony Vegas :P) basic XP-based editing program that will do some converting and the trimming/joining features I need? Thanks!

Can you use WinFF to convert the files to avi, then use Windows Movie Maker to edit?

I haven't tried it but it MAY be possible to hack windows movie maker into accepting HD files on XP.

And yes you may have to convert the files. Here's some info on that.

The prior suggestions all involve lossy editing, which ought to be avoided for simple joining and cutting operations. Try TSMuxer or Avidemux for lossless cutting or joining - bear in mind that TSMuxer will automatically use the nearest keyframe to the selected split point, while in Avidemux you must select it manually (there's a frame type indicator in the status bar that will show "I" frames).
