Filemaker upgrade problems

Trouble opening old Filemaker 7 file on Filemaker Pro 10.

I currently purchased FileMaker Pro 10 for Mac. I currently have been using FileMaker 7.
I fully installed the new version but when I go ahead and open my fp7 file within in Version 10 it reads "inventory.fp7" is damaged and cannot be opened. Use the Recover command to recover this file"
So I try to recover this file within FP10 and its says its "Locked or in use". So I made sure that it was unlocked and not in use. But still i am unable to open my inventory in the newly purchase version.
Is there something I am missing? did I do something wrong with installing.

Which OS? I seem to recall reading about an issue with SnowLeopard, FMP10, and .fp7 files.

Response by poster: Its an Imac. Newly purchased running OS 10.5.8. It was purchased before the release of Snow Leopard.

Response by poster: Yea! It just went through and accepted all the old files, and they look great!

Thanks if you came here to help.

Hi R. Mutt,
I think I might be dealing with EXACTLY the same problem as you had and would really appreciate some advice as to how you solved the issue. I've been working with FM Pro 8 (.fp7 files) and when I got snow leopard installed, I could no longer import images. So, I had to get the new FM Pro Advanced 10. Now when trying to open my program, I get the same exact same message as you: "inventory.fp7" is damaged and cannot be opened.
I had to keep clicking through while it was opening, but once it finally got done, i could open my rolodex, but not the inventory and anything connected to the inventory was affected.
Anyway, I don't really know what to do at this point so if you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

Response by poster: Hi Albryhno,

I found this solution on FM Forum on their website. It worked perfectly for me and I was able to recover my database with no problems. Below is the exact instructions that I received:

Forum Answer:
"Close the file, duplicate in the Finder.
Try to open the duplicate, if you can SAVE AS both smaller and clone.
Try recover on the clone.
If the recover has no errors, try importing data from the smaller copy.
Sometimes, recovering a copy on another platform works.

Backup your database with enthusiasm, after any data entry session, back it up.
Back it up to another drive or flash drive.
Back it up again."

Hope this helps you too.
