When did Kakashi get his eye?

NarutoFilter: Please help me confirm what I thought I saw. The recent (in the anime) depiction of Kakashi's acquisition of Obito's eye goes against what I recall seeing earlier in the show.

In Kakashi Gaiden (the most recent double episode) they showed the circumstances leading up to Kakashi receiving the Uchiha Sharingan eye. I recall, in an earlier episode (perhaps a _much_ earlier episode), that they already did a flashback to where he acquired the eye and both Kakashi and Obito were both much older than the gaiden story might suggest.

What I recall is a scene in a field (probably with trees nearby) where Obito (though I don't think you know his name at this point) had fallen, and Kakashi was in the process of retreating from some enemy. They spoke briefly, and then the viewer makes the assumption that the transfer took place at that point. There a lot of flashback in the Naruto universe, and this one might require hundreds of hours of my time to find. Does anybody remember this? Can you point me to episode numbers?

The thing is that both Kakashi and Obito were full grown at this point. I have a bet with a buddy, and I need the filter to help me!

Perhaps it's episode 80

Critically damaged, Orochimaru calls off the invasion and flees the village with his forces. In the forest, Naruto and Gaara both lay on the ground, devoid of chakra. Naruto sympathizes with Gaara for his childhood, but threatens to kill Gaara if he should ever bring harm to his friends again. Realizing that Naruto's strength came from the desire to protect others, Gaara begins to reshape his view of the world as his siblings take him home, and apologizes to Temari and Kankuro. The next day, the ninja of Konoha mourn the deaths of those who died during the invasion, especially the Third Hokage, and ponder the meaning of the Third Hokage's sacrifice. Meanwhile, Kakashi pays respects to his deceased friend, Obito.

I'm not sure that has actually been shown in the anime before, but rather in the last few chapters of Part I of the manga.

I haven't seen this new episode of the anime, but as I remember the manga, Kakashi, Obito and a medical ninja girl in their team were on a mission that went wrong somehow. They weren't fully grown, more like teenagers of about post timeskip Naruto's age.

The girl got captured and Obito left to save her, but Kakashi didn't because he'd been taught that the mission was always more important. Eventually he relented, but his left eye was injured by an enemy. After they'd regrouped somehow, Obito had his right side crushed by falling rocks, and asked the girl to transfer his remaining left eye to Kakashi.

Well in the manga, the Kakashi Gaiden was from right before the time skip, in chapter 239. (I think the Shippuden equivalent starts at 245?) I'm glad they're finally animating it though I'm waiting until Thurs to see it on Hulu. But the anime is a little out of order in its depictions, since it looks like they've been saving this for a bit of filler before getting into the Itachi arc.

I don't recall the specific scene you mention, but my guess is that if it's anywhere, it's in one of the filler episodes or the early Naruto movies from before the manga got back ahead and filled out Kakashi's backstory. Not too exact, but hopefully that might help narrow it down. It wasn't the above mentioned episode 80 though, all you see there is Kakashi staring at the memorial.

As far as the full grown thing goes, I wouldn't put too much stock into it. Remember the early Uchiha massacre flashbacks? Where Itachi is 12-going-on-30?

Response by poster: It feels like I may have lost this one. I swore I remember a scene where an adult Kakashi is hovering over a lost comrade during a flashback. I guess I put the sharingan in there in my head. I hate losing bets . . .
