If you're looking for reinstall/repair of the OS or data recovery I can't help you there. But if you know it's the hard drive and just want to replace it it's easy to do yourself: guide or from Apple (pdf). Should be able to get a new drive from any shop that carries computer parts.

Best answer: There is an electronics shop chain called "Dick Smiths" in NZ, who have a bunch of shops in the Christchurch area. They are an Apple reseller, and carry parts as well. Not sure if they do instore repairs, as they are more like the RadioShack rather than a specialist, but they are likely open on Sunday (which it currently is in NZ), and may be able to get it repaired and shipped to a another store if your daughter will be traveling around the country.

I've also dealt with Renaissance mentioned by Fearnothing above (they own the MagnumMac Apple retail stores as well), and they are a great option if repair services are needed. Not open Sundays though I don't think, and have fewer locations.

If your daughter is studying there, most of the University's (including Canterbury University in Christchurch) have student stores selling Apple products (the stores are open to the public as well). See StudentIT stores.

Best answer: I've also dealt with Magnum Mac in Carlyle Street (aka Renaissance) and they've been great -- we had an iBook with a regularly failing logic board so we were in there often. I don't know anything about Service Plus, though.

Best answer: I have had direct reccommendations for Magnum Mac from a few different people (including my Dad) just to add to the pile on. Dick Smith will be open today but will send it away somewhere (they don't do repairs themselves, and I dnot' think they sell parts like hard drives although their website will tell you) and it will take 2-4 weeks to get back. So better to wait a day until somewhere that specifically does repairs is open.

Response by poster: She went to Magnum Mac. Thanks all for the help! I love the internets.
