Mobile phones in Syria. Anybody happen to know what band they use over there/what company one could get a sim card from if one was going to stay there for a year?

If no one in this thread give you a solid answer, you could always call or email the Syrian consulate in the closest major city and ask them for information.

According to GSMWorld, there are three GSM networks in Syria and they are all 900MHz networks. Two of them also have 1800MHz.

I can't really help with the rest of your question. You can probably get a SIM card from any of those providers, assuming they don't require proof of residency or citizenship or anything like that as I've heard that some providers in some countries do.
