Help me plan an international vacation for two. For less than $1000.

A friend and I are thinking about taking a week-long trip together in mid/late August. We want to get out of North America, and we can leave from either NY or Montreal. Where should we go?
We'd like to avoid Europe, if possible, and we're comfortable using local public transportation and staying in less-than-luxury hotels/hostels. We'd also like to be able to explore and mingle with people in the places we visit: no all-in-one resort packages, in other words.
We're collectively conversant in Spanish, French and Russian. We've considered Central America, mostly for the cheap plane tickets, but is there something we're missing? Some amazing off-season deal to Thailand, etc?

Also - $1000 for BOTH? or for each?

Response by poster: $1000 for both. I realize that people won't have information about *specific* tickets, etc -- more curious about where in the world might be a good place to look.

Best answer: Have you considered Nicaragua? Tickets aren't bad, and once you get there you can spend next to nothing. Beaches in the South, mountains in the North, the Caribbean to the East and volcanoes everywhere. Tourism hasn't completely recovered since the Reagan era (although people are discovering it again), so it's a more authentic experience.

Best answer: FareCompare is a decent resource at guessing where to go on the cheap for upcoming months.

Iceland is cheap these days. No idea about August and nobody else will have any idea either. Post again in July.
