How can I check my tax returns were received?

I filed paper versions of my federal and state (ca) tax returns out of country. How can I check they were received?

I filled in and posted the forms in the UK, didn't get the option to track them. Would be very useful to be able to check they were received.

Are you expecting a refund? If you are you can be assured your federal return has been processed when you get status updates on "where's my refund".
