Can I force WMP to use less bandwidth?

Can I throttle the speed at which WMP plays streaming media? When I fire it up, it attempts to play at 128k, and kills our inbound bandwidth. We're in an industrial-boonies area of town and only have a pokey ISDN due to distance from the tellyphone whatsit. Despite the unused fiber hatch right in front of the building.
Yes, I am aware of non-MS products. This question is not about them.

how about the setting that says "connection speed"? under options --> performance. change it so that it doesn't auto-detect your bandwidth, which should (hopefully) stop it from hogging the line.

You mean non-MS media players, right? Because something like NetLimiter would do the job for you.
