Can I cash this French cheque in Canada and keep it in Euros?

Cashing a French cheque in Canada, or possibly in France... [more inside]

I have a "cheque postal" from La Poste that I want to cash. Trouble is, I want it to stay in Euros. If I deposit it and then change it back to Euro funds I'll lose hundreds of dollars. If I wait until I go to France in February, I'll have to open an account there and I'm not sure that will be an easy thing to arrange (I am a British Citizen but I will only be in France for two months, so it may be hard to set up an account).

Has anyone ever opened a Euro funds account in Canada? What are the fees like? Ever cashed a Euro cheque in Canada? Can Western Union do it? Ever opened a French bank account? What's my best option?
