MeatFilter: Where can I find raw tri-tip cuts in the city of San Francisco?

Best answer: I would try Drewes Brothers - they're a pretty good butcher and I bet if they don't have it they can order it.

Alternatively, if you want some really good local organic beef, call up Marin Sun Farms and ask them to bring you some tri tips to the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market. I got an excellent beef tenderloin from them for Thanksgiving.

I've seen it (and bought it) at Whole Foods. Not recently, though - but I haven't been looking.

(I should have, though, because the weather's great and who doesn't want to grill on an evening like this?)

Either Drewes or that butcher at the west end of Cortland by Wild Side West.

Most grocery stores carry tri-tip in SF, and it can be very good even if you don't spend a lot of money. I made a big tri-tip roast last night that we got at Lucky for six bucks on sale, and it was superb.

I believe this is the butcher to which rhizome refers. I've admired it from the outside driving or biking past but never been in. Looks good.

Andronico's on Irving and Tower Market up on Portola both regularly have tri-tip. Might be a bit trickier getting plain tri-tip, not marinated in anything, but just ask. Also: yum! Tri-tip.

Drewes is ridiculously expensive. We've gotten great tritip from Safeway before.

I just saw it at the Pac-n-Save in Emeryville. If they've got it there, it couldn't be THAT hard to find.

Alhambra in the mission usually has it and they've got much more reasonable prices than most independent butchers.

i just had some kobe beef tri-tip from the berkeley bowl (in...berkeley) and it was some of the most amazing beef ever. marin sun farms will cut a tri-tip for you but you have to special-order it and pick it up from them at the farmer's market in the ferry building. you can get pre-marinated from any trader joe's also. basically you can get it nearly anywhere.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone, I assumed that it would be a lot tougher to find it then it apparently is. BBQ in the middle of January? Love it! Enjoy the weather everyone!

Star Market on Claremont Ave at the Oakland Berkeley border. Same blackened tri-tip recipe since the late 30's. Get there early or order in advance then grill it up.
