Seeking Web-based system for managing course registrations

I'm looking for recommendations on a Web-based system for managing class registrations, preferably one that's open source.

A friend works in the training department of a large company which offers internal classes to its employees. They contracted with a commercial vendor to supply a Web-based system that lets administrators add course descriptions, class schedules and allows employees to sign up for these classes. The administrators can also print rosters of those who've signed up for the class.

While the commercial software has all the features they need, it's not able to handle the load. With as few as 20 simultaneous users, administrators report that it takes up to 10 minutes to get a confirmation page after submitting a form. IT staff at my friend's company verified that the problem is in the application, but the vendor is unresponsive about fixing it so my friend asked if I knew of any alternatives (which I don't).

They'll undoubtedly want to make at least some minor customizations, so open source is preferable. I don't think the platform or database system it uses matters much; it's a big enough company that they have at least one of everything anyway and an IT staff with skills diverse enough to install and customize it.

I looked through sourceforge.net, but did not find any obvious winner. Does the hivemind know of a good system for this, or better yet, have a recommendation based on first-hand experience?

Moodle should do what you need, including moodle calendar. It's aimed at education (we use it at our school with a few hundred users at a time), so you can create teachers and student accounts, and students can sign up for courses, and teachers can add events, documents, tests, all sorts of things to a given course. It has a very wide userbase, so there's plenty of info on the forums and existing modules.

The user backend can either be standalone, or integrated into a very wide range of existing user/password systems, including imap and ldap. It's PHP/mysql for what it's worth.

If you need a more advanced room booking service along with the events calendar, I can recommend the MRBS module btw.

Ah, nearly forgot. There is another open-source alternative to moodle, but I've not used it personally - sakai

Another vote for Moodle, an LMS specialist that I know raves about it. Also, Moodle is open-source, according to its website.
