How do I perfect my Rachel Maddow Halloween costume?

As of this morning, I was costume-less. Who can I be for Halloween? Then, my brother brilliantly suggested Rachel Maddow, and it all clicked into place. I'm a dyke, I already kind of look like her, plus, I can needle all the Sarah Palins that are sure to be out and about tomorrow.

But how do I perfect this costume? I'm thinking, MSNBC press pass, blazer, and some strategic hair gel/TV makeup. Does anyone have wardrobe suggestions? How do I get my hair to do what hers does? Should I get props? How can I hone my impression of her?

Thanks Hive Mind, and Happy Halloween!

Best answer: Ms. Maddow has said in interviews that she asks her makeup people to "do her like a man" - in other words, minimalism is the key - very light foundation, lip gloss, and maybe an eyebrow pencil to make your eyebrows arched and prominent.

From this picture, it looks like she mousses her hair so that it's parted on the right and slicked forward a little, then gels up the front section (a tiny bit of gel in your hand, run it straight up and twist to the left through the front section). It takes some practice, and it might be easier to have a guy do it for you.

You could try to replicate this image (it's pretty iconic amongst my circle), but it might be hard to find all those buttons.

Costumes without really obvious cues often work best with multiple people involved. Unfortunately Maddow's partner is not well known, so that's probably out. Is there anyone going to the same party that can do a good Keith Olbermann or Pat Buchanan?

As far as props go, she always has a 'talk me down' segment, so you could make a button that says "Talk Me Down!"

Perhaps you can also make/wear a sash that says "Ms. Information" (which is the graphic that's displayed in the background when she does her "holy mackerel"/news-you-might-have-missed segment).

I hope you have some very MSNBC-watching peer group parties to attend, because I don't think Ms. Maddow is famous or recognizable enough just yet. She's not odd-looking or famous enough for most "costumes" I can imagine. (Palin has the glasses, the suits, the ridiculous voice, it's easy...)

But as for working on your impression so that people "get it"... be sure to talk as if you're on the air all the time. If someone hands you a drink, say "Thank you, Brian, I'll be sure to try this out.... now back to you, Susan. Earlier you explained that..."

Third-person can also be your friend. Don't excuse yourself for the bathroom. Say "And on that note.... it's time for a short break. We'll be right back."

On her show she seems to favor t shirts under suit jackets (as seen here and here). It's a look that I only associate with her.

If you are going for her on-camera look: false eyelashes.
