Staying in Savannah, GA

Fun suggestions and accommodation for Savannah GA- Filter and/or changing a flight-Filter.
I am attending a conference this weekend in Savannah, Georgia. I am supposed to fly in on Friday morning and leave Sunday afternoon.
I have just found out that due to a communication error and an illness of a colleague who will now not be attending, I am now without a hotel room for Friday and Saturday night. Oookay. Neither Mr. Oflinkey nor any friends are able to skip on down last minute to hang out, so I am off alone.
I am looking to do one of two things: Stay in a safe and cheap(er) place Friday and Saturday night and find a few things to do around town Friday and Saturday for a lone woman OR somehow finagle a flight back home Friday night.
Any ideas for safe hotels or B&Bs? Things to do? Alternately does anyone have suggestions for changing flights above and beyond the obvious? I am about to get on the phone with Expedia to see what the damage would be through them, but if anyone has had luck doing other things, I would appreciate the suggestions. Or the reality check that I have no options in that arena.

Things to do:
Here's a link to an A&E events calendar for Savannah. Obviously you can adjust it for dates and categories and note the music and dining links. The Film Festival is big deal and highly recommended.
As for hotels, the Desoto Hilton or Marshall House are located downtown, safe, and have lots of access to downtown stuff. Savannah is a very walkable city and there are any number of bars/restaurants/shops.
If you're staying over the weekend, you can always call for a meetup of Mefites that'll be in town (over in MetaTalk(, say for lunch or dinner.

Maybe check for hostels, too? Many offer private rooms as well as dorm-type rooms. This one starts private rooms at $45.

The second link in mediareport's comment is in a nice location, most residential, probably a 15-20 minute walk from conference halls, or a 5 minute cab ride. There's major supermarket literally across the street and the gorgeous Forsyth Park about 3 blocks to the west.
