Sky Whales movie?

Can you help me remember this barely remembered cartoon from my childhood? A community of alien looking people live on a floating island and go out in flying boats to catch flying whales. Every so often one of them would turn blue and die, and they would throw him down a well. The well was actually a hole passing through the island and as the body fell it would turn into a new sky whale. Any ideas?

That was haunting and brilliant. I don't understand why it's not more famous.

Robert Llewellyn! I knew I recognized that name.

I don't understand why it's not more famous.

When it came to independent animation back at that time, being included in one of the Tournees was just about as famous as it was possible to be. There wasn't really any market, let alone broad interest, in that kind of thing, unless your cartoon was "sick and twisted" or you worked for the National Film Board of Canada.
