Iceland - campervan recommendations

We want to go to Iceland late August/early September. We've never camped, or vanned, much less campervanned, but it sounds like an adventure! Now seeking advice from Iceland holiday veterans, van connoisseurs and fellow travelers. [more inside]

Things to do in Reykjavik when you're too early for check-in

As seems to be the trend around here, my wife and I will visit Reykjavik in October. However, our flight gets in to Keflavik very early. Any suggestions for entertainment in the mean time? Additional questions inside. [more inside]

Strolling in Iceland: looking for short, flat, remote, and scenic trails

We are a small group of photographers spending 2 weeks in Iceland. For us, somewhere that feels remote is way more appealing than checking off the can’t-miss attractions alongside everybody else. However, this is in conflict with our hiking ability: the group can handle moderately rough trails (no scrambling, but some loose rocks are fine), we are probably OK with up to 2km round-trip per hike, but hills are a problem (please, no more than 30m elevation change.) Just like everybody else, we’re driving all around the island, including the westfjords, and have a (questionable) 4x4. [more inside]

Iceland vacation plans a bit amiss - help!

When there seemed to be an endless supply of RV's/motor homes for rent my week in Iceland yesterday, I bought my air tix from the US. Today though things seem to have dried up and I'm being offered only trailers mounted on an F-150, which might work if I have to. Plan was to drive around Ring Road etc. and since we're obviously late for this summer, figured that would save the trouble of endless hotel reservations and disappointments. Any MeFites have any suggestions to save my trip?

Iceland at summer's end?

I will be in Iceland from August 25-September 2nd this year. So far all I have booked are my plane tickets and two nights in a youth hostel in Reykjavik to start off the trip. What should I do? What are some places that are must sees? [more inside]

Iceland vaction this summer - camping, RV or hotel/hostel? Or tour bus?

Looking for tips on which would be the best way to see most if not all of the natural wonders on a sorta cheap budget. Which way to the Bjork statue? [more inside]

Iceland: specific question about transport, car hire & campers.

I know there have been lots of Iceland questions, but I am specifically trying to decide how much I'll regret not hiring a 4x4, and whether a 4x4 camper van would be worth it, given the only ones you seem to be able to get are really basic car-sleeping models, not motorhomes. [more inside]

Best or cheapest horseback riding in Iceland

My girlfriend and I are experienced riders but do not want to spend over $100 for a couple of hours for a tour. Are there any cheaper services or ones that you have experience that are worth that amount? [more inside]

Iceland decisions: ice cave or glacier?

My friends and I will be in Iceland for four days in late December. The plan is to start in Reykjavik on our first day and to end at the Blue Lagoon on the last day. Now we're trying to decide what to do with our free time. [more inside]

Ultra cheap bedding in Reykjavík?

We will be car camping in Iceland in a few weeks, we have rented a car already but need to source the cheapest possible (ideally secondhand) duvets, blankets and pillows as we're liable to need lots, and will have to leave them behind. Where can we pick bedding up for the lowest possible price in (midweek) Reykjavík? Alternatively is there anywhere we could get bargain sleeping bags?

Iceland with young boys over Christmas

My family is going to Iceland over Christmas vacation! Yay! But.. well, the reasons are mostly "it's cheap to get to" and "it's different than anywhere we've ever been" and "it's time the kids start learning how much bigger the world is than the United States". Are we insane? [more inside]

Which prepaid smartphone should I get for international travel?

I'm planning my first (and hopefully not last) international vacation and I'd like to get a smartphone for traveling that can be used on a prepaid basis for both voice and data. When not traveling it will not be used as a phone, although I'd still like it to perform double duty as a mp3/move player at home. Home is the united states and travel will be to Iceland (and beyond). [more inside]

Reykjavik, Iceland for 24 hours

I'm going to London in early February for work and thinking of taking advantage of the fact that Icelandair doesn't charge extra for stopovers in Reykjavik. Would this be worth doing in early February for 24 hours on a pretty small budget, and on a Sunday? [more inside]

How to spend National Day in Iceland?

We (2 adults, 2 kids) will be in Iceland over National Day (June 17th). Before we found out that we would be there for National Day, we had planned on leaving Reykjavik to drive the Ring Road on the 17th. Now that we know about National Day, should we stay in Reykjavik one more day to experience National Day there? Or is National Day better experienced in a smaller town? We are open to anything, but just want to really experience Iceland.
