Road Trip AUS - Where To Stay?

Road Trip AUS - usually when I roadtrip (in the US), I'll just stop for the day when; somewhere particularly nice turns up; I'm tired and reach the next motel. Is this style of roadtripping possible in AUS? From the research I've done so far, I'm not too sure, and I'm concerned about hassles involving pre-booking hotels to ensure a place to stay each night: for me, in a roadtrip, I'm looking for the freedom of not having to make daily schedules. Viewing natural Australia around Sydney (without too much walking)

We have a couple more days in Sydney, and need a few suggestions for what to do with the rest of our time. I would prefer sights and scenes of nature we can't see anywhere else. The difficulty: my wife needs a break from walking. [more inside]

Day trips and hikes in and around Sydney & Melbourne?

Next week I am visiting Australia for the first time. Flying in to Sydney, spending a week there with relatives in Merrylands, then two weeks with relatives in Melbourne (Braybrook) and then another week in Sydney. I want to know what is the best way to spend my time given that I am primarily interested in nature and day hikes, so the most pressing question is really 'What are the best day trips and hikes within a two-hour radius of Sydney and Melbourne?' Other factors: [more inside]

Most convenient beach for Western Sydney?

We went to the beach today (Coogee) and it was awesome. But tolls, parking fees, the stress of driving through busy Sydney and having to drive at all after a long day of sun and swimming really sucked. So I am trying to figure out if there is any beach within about an hour of public transport from here (carlingford) and I can't really see any. But I figure metafilter knows better tricks than google maps, right? [more inside]

Bagless dogs on Brooklyn subways recently?

In the last month, I've noticed a lot of people bringing their pet dogs on the train with no bag? Has anyone else noticed if MTA has been more relaxed about this recently? This last gal strolled her black lab across the platform at Morgan Ave L in front of employees with no repercussions. Does MTA really care enough to ticket anymore? [more inside]

New Year's Eve in Sydney, 2014 Edition

So I'm doing my Working Holiday in Australia and I purposely started in Sydney so I could experience the big New Year's celebration here. I did NYC's ball drop in Times Square 3 years ago, and New Year's Eve is the biggest holiday of them all for me. I need the 101 on what NYE in Sydney is like, and what I should do. [more inside]

A non-touristy single day in Sydney

I'm visiting Sydney this weekend for the Festival of Dangerous Ideas and have all of Friday (and a few hours of Saturday) to kill while my friend is working. I'm from Melbourne and have visited Sydney many times and seen all the Sydney landmarks and touristy spots (The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Sydney Tower, Bridge climb etc) before. [more inside]

Are we spending too much on bus fare in Sydney?

Recommendations for specific things on an ongoing Australian vacation.

Asking on behalf of (The Rt Hon.) MP, who currently has spotty internet access while he travels around Australia. Where are the best places to 1) see an improv comedy show in Sydney, 2) see a punk/hardcore show in Melbourne, 3) get to relatively quickly from either of those cities to be able to see the outback (as opposed to the bush, which has already been seen on this trip)? Snorkeling - Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados, or St. Kitts?

I'll be cruising the southern Caribbean, stopping at Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados, and St. Kitts and would like to do some good snorkeling at one of those islands. I don't mind having to charter a boat or do some kayaking in calm waters to get there, but I want to see some serious fish and coral. Previously, I had a great time at Waterlemon Cay in St. John, USVI and Captain Cook Cove in Kona, Hawai'i, but was not at all impressed by Trunk Bay, also in St. John, or Nassau, Bahamas. Where is good? [more inside]

Best things to do in Australia's Blue Mountains?

My boyfriend and I are going with my parents to Australia in June, and my parents have tasked us with finding out things to do for the portion of our trip in the Blue Mountains, which will be in early June.
