It rubs the lotion in its skin

I've heard the following phrase in a few places (namely Family Guy) and after googling I can't figure out what it's a refrence to: "it rubs the lotion in its skin, else it gets the hose again." What IS this?

It's what the serial killer said to the girl he kidnapped in 'Silence of the Lambs', the first Hannibal Lecter movie.

Someone wrote a song about it and made a video out of clips from the movie - I think it was an FPP not too long ago but I might be wrong about that.

Buffalo Bill says it to his victims in The Silence of the Lambs. He makes them use lotion to loosen their skin.

Response by poster: Ah, okay, that makes sense now.

jig: Yes, but looking through all those links only got me as far as "Buffalo Bill", and having never seen those films, did me little good.

'Silence of the Lambs', the first Hannibal Lecter movie

I'm sorry, what?

Considering that the first link that even looks promising is on page 3 (link 22) and easily overlooked, and all the rest are just random people quoting it, I'll venture the answer "Really."

I, personally, knew where it came from, but considering that, as the parent said, the quote appears everywhere, a Google search just shows you that...it's used everywhere.

Now is the time to link to Silence! -- Silence of the Lambs, the Musical. You want Track 6 here.

It's also said by Buffalo Bob in Joe Dirt.

ODiv: 'Manhunter', while a superb movie, would be the first Hannibal 'Lecktor' movie, according to your link.

I was actually trolling for caitlinburke - she's a great fan of the movie - but you beat her to it.

The words "Silence of the Lambs" appear on the search results page I linked to.

It types the question in the Google.

But if you didn't know the quote was from Silence of the Lambs, that is an entirely unhelpful piece of information, now isn't it? Question asked, question answered, move on.

I highly recommend going out and seeing the scene, however, because it is the very definition of unintentional commedy.

How about the first result for this search then?

On which "Silence of the Lambs" appears twice, "Simpsons" appears twice, "Jedi" appears twice, "sopranos" appears once, and various other bands and writers are mentioned. Granted, this question probably could have been answered with some pretty rudimentary searching, but its far from the worst question I've ever seen asked here.

Besides, the ensuing discussion and links makes the thread worth it.

IMDB quote search is dead good for this kind of thing.

There's a "hindsight is 20/20" corollary for Googling. If you know what the pot of gold looks like, then you know when you've found it. If you don't even know you're looking for a pot or what might be in it...

BTW - the "it" business is supposed to be the killer's way of dehumanizing his victims. He doesn't address them as people, so as to keep his distance from them. Makes them easier to kill.

Good point, scarabic.

I find myself in sympathy with phrontist. No TV or movies, here (just never got the habit). I'm not bragging, just pointing out that those kind of references make no sense if you don't speak the "language".

It's always a disappointment to find that someone i thought was clever and cryptic is only parroting some line from some show or commercial.

I don't know what page you're looking at, but the first result I get back is this one, which is entirely unambiguous as to the origin of the quote. Then you have results 3 and 5, which are titled "Index of quotes from the movie Silence of the Lambs, The - 1991." and "Memorable Quotes from Silence of the Lambs, The (1991)", respectively. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to draw a conclusion here.

jjg - read what scarabic said again. I don't think you're really absorbing it. And if you think this is so egregious take it to MeTa and find out if you're right or just want to argue more - but we get your "just google it" point so stop flailing the rest of us with it.

Meanwhile I have got tons of film and tv related quotes in my brain - but didn't get this one til I started checking the links. And hadn't noticed that IMDB now has quote search, so I count this as yet another helpful AskMe for my purposes.

I always figured that if Adrian Monk (from the TV show "Monk") searched Stottlemyer's house, he'd find his "dead" wife, Trudy, in a well in Stottlemyer's basement. :D

"I didn't know you liked to sew, Stottlemyer."
