Google Workspace for Education alternatives
What alternatives are available for use in a school setting? Sharing of educational materials for teachers and students a priority. Email would also be useful. And an alternative to Google Classroom (although I understand this is a big ask as Classroom is a leader in this field). [more inside]

Please share the best statements or other responses you've seen responding to the Trump executive order on K-12 education. Looking for examples to help shape/embolden an organization's response. This statement from the NEA is an example of the type of thing I mean.

Trying to write a research paper for graduate school
This is for a research methods class in master's degree program in applied linguistics. I have my topic, but I need to nail down my research question and figure out my methodology. I'm overwhelmed by searching and sifting through and reading journal articles and keeping it all organized. I'm hoping some of you will have some guidance for me! [more inside]

Housing suggestions for a student doing an exchange year in Paris?
Our 20-year-old son, a US/EU citizen and independent traveler who's already studied in Germany for several years and speaks some French, is applying to the EU's Erasmus exchange program to attend the Université Gustave Eiffel for a year (Sept 2025 to July 2026). Would you suggest prioritizing living in student housing near this university, or student housing closer to the city center, or are there other (somewhat affordable) housing options that would support social immersion? Help with rote memorization (and is it just me?)
I have a really hard time with rote memorization (spelling, foreign language vocab, scientific/technical vocab) I've been using the ANKI app, and a word will come up, I'll look at it, and by the time it comes around again, I will have forgotten it. Even if I'm studying a tiny set like 5 words-- it just flies out of my head as soon as it leaves the screen. Is something wrong with my brain? Is there any hope? [more inside]

Abstract maths resources for adults?
I learned maths up to college level. I know how to do all the basics as well as a little beyond that, e.g., improper integrals and matrix base changes. Yet I do not know the why of any of it. I am moving numbers around. Which resources could help me broaden my understanding in my free time at my own pace? [more inside]

Becoming a better shredder
I've been playing guitar for 40 years. I'm decent but not great. I've listening to a lot of contemporary prog, metalcore, etc., and would like to become faster, cleaner, and especially develop a better sense of rhythm. I don't want to take in-person classes. What online class/videos/app has worked for you?

Suggestions for online math degree programs
I think I want to do a degree in pure mathematics. It has to be done online because I cannot go anywhere to do it (due to lack of funds--yuck--and a full time job--yay!), and the local university will not accept me. I have conducted an extensive search and turned up only two options: Open University and the Sorbonne. I'm writing to ask if you guys know of other options.

Thirteen year old grandson wants a book of poetry...
He's an avid reader, reads well beyond his years and has asked for a poetry book "Well, i like poetry books, maybe ones that are a bit deeper? Not just where the sidewalk ends and that sort of stuff" I'm thinking Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, like that. What can you recommend?

Does anyone remember this video?
In middle school, before being given the hepatitis B vaccine, we were shown a music video about it. I remember the chorus being “Get the facts! Get the vax! Get the facts! Get the vax!“
I would love to see it again.

Middle school test taking strategies
My smart, capable, newly minted middle schooler, used to getting top grades, is suddenly barely passing her exams and extremely frustrated by it. As far as I can see, her main problem is reading the questions precisely. She knows her stuff, she just answers half the question, or a tangential question, or completely overlooks questions! Can you suggest studying strategies for the next time I help her prepare for a test? [more inside]
