What's this weird humming noise in my house?

For the past couple weeks, there's been a humming noise in my kitchen and bathroom (which share a wall). It's very audible in the kitchen and bathroom, and gets much quieter when you go into the sunroom (off the kitchen on one side) or the living room (off the kitchen on the other side). [more inside]

How do I protect my kitchen against a possible/probable leak?

My garbage disposal is broken again and won't turn on. The last time this happened, my neighbor flooded my kitchen with filthy water by using hers because our lines are connected but her junk dominates mine. What can I do to protect my cabinets, drawers, and floors while I wait for help? A plumber won't come 'til mid-tomorrow (Sunday) at the earliest or Monday morning at the latest. I do not have towels to spare. It's late evening for me right now.

Chainsaw beginner advice

I just purchased a 14" electric chainsaw to cut down some small trees (<6") and overgrowth in my back yard. I'm comfortable with most basic power tools but have never used a chainsaw before and don't have anyone around to teach me. I have done a good amount of reading and watching youtube videos. Any other real life safety tips or advice?

Best multipurpose garage floor covering?

I've got a two-car garage with a concrete floor. My kids and I sometimes set up the ping-pong table in the garage, and we'd like some kind of floor covering which will provide a bit of cushion for our feet and will also be suitable for (sometimes wet or snowy) cars. [more inside]

Replacement for Apartment Therapy?

I like interior design as a hobby and I've been reading Apartment Therapy for years. It's been getting harder to ignore the clickbait and outright advertising articles, but also as of a couple days ago they keep locking me out for 5-15 minutes at a time via the "we think you're using automated tools" interstitial - and the prove you're human mechanism fails. Help me find a new interior design website? [more inside]

Call a plumber... then what?

What do I do about a leak to the basement? Tomorrow morning I'm going to call a plumber... then what? It's below where our dishwasher/sink is so that has to be what caused the leak. There's not much water damage... but there's a bit? So what happens next? [more inside]

How to get the fragrance off of books?

I get library books home delivered once every 14 days. Unfortunately, the books often smell so strongly of fragrance/perfume/bodyspray from other library users that I can't read them without getting a migraine. Is there a way to de-fragrance books? Should I be putting them in a box next to a container of charcoal, or bicarb soda, or something else?

Why is my water pressure so high and what to do about it?

About two months ago I noticed a very slow drip from a pvc pipe attached to a valve on my water heater. The heater is about 4 years old. I called a plumber and in the meantime put a bucket underneath the pipe. By the time the plumber came out 2 weeks later, i had filled about a quarter of the bucket. It was not a constant drip, just intermittent as to when it would drip and I couldn't identify if something was causing it. [more inside]

Under-sink Water Filters - What are the Best Ones to Filter out Lead?

We recently had our water tested by our town, and the results came back indicating the presence of lead. Not a lot, but who wants ANY lead in their water? We can't afford a big filter for the entire house, so we've decided an under-sink filter would best serve our needs. I'm looking for recommendations from folks who have purchased filtration systems for the home. We are researching the best under-sink water filters, ones that I can (hopefully) install myself.
