Automatic switching between bluetooth handsfree and handset use?

Are there any handsfree kits on the US market which will automatically switch from handsfree to handset use when stepping far enough away from the car?
I am considering buying a bluetooth handsfree set for my fiance's car.
He has a Samsung SLM cell phone which he keeps in his pocket at all times.
He's forgetful and doesn't remember to switch out of bluetooth mode when he's not driving.
He hates headsets which go in the ear.

Wire up the handsfree kit to the switched power of the car. When the car is shut off, the handsfree kit "disappears" from the phone, and the phone should switch to handset on its own.

This is a function of the handset, not the handsfree kit.
Of course, the only time I can imagine this being an issue is if he is mid-call, with the car running (or at least, with the key on and powering the handsfree kit), using the handsfree kit, and he walks away from the car.
As long as his phone fully supports the bluetooth Handsfree or Headset profiles, he would not drop call - the phone will automatically switch from the handsfree to the handset.
All that being said, I can't imagine that this is the scenario you are positing - so OP, some clarification of what the expected behavior is would be helpful.

Will do.
History:
I purchased a bluetooth headset for him. He kept the earpiece and phone in his front pocket when he wasn't using it. He would not notice calls because he would not notice his phone vibrating in his pocket (he wears loose jeans.) His headset could not alert him because it was in his pocket and not his ear.
He complains whenever he is being called while driving because he isn't able to reach his phone (he notices the vibrations because his pants are tight to his body when sitting.)
Bottomline:
I want to see if there is any way that a car bluetooth kit will automatically activate when he enters the car. I want him to be able to use the handset when he is *away* from the car without switching out of bluetooth mode.

Most car bluetooth kits do this.
