Mac & Security Questions.
1. What security cable should I buy to secure my computer when @ coffee shops and the like?
2. Should I buy procell or rechargeables for my mighty mouse?
3. Should I upgrade my Laptop HDD to a faster, bigger drive?
4. How to I encrypt my Mac HDD as I'm cloning it to a new hard drive
5. What new speakers should I buy?
1. I'd like to secure my laptop to a chair or something when I'm working at coffee shops.
2. I have a mighty mouse with dead batteries, what should I replace them with, cheapies, better or rechargeables?
3. I run PhotoShop, Flash, InDesign, Ilistrator and many others at the same time. I have 4 gb ram, 2.2 gzh core 2 duo, and currently a 120 gb 5400 rpm drive, I'm wanting to cheaply but it up to at least 160 in space, and at least run a faster, 7200 + sata drive. What's 16mb cache?
Here's what I'm looking at ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136278 )
4. Basically I want to take my unencrypted drive, start copying it to my back up drive, while it's doing that it'll encrypt it, and I can store the key on a server, else where. Is that easy to do? I'm on a mac. 10.5.3
(off site data storage)
5. I broke my old ones. I'm looking for a sub, and a right and a left pair thats either standard audio out or USB. Suggestions? I want good quality. but don't want to spend more then $50, $35 if possible
6. What are best laptop practices for securing data and the device itself? Including, physical protection, data, and offsite backups.
7. Also what should I be doing to protect it from software issues and viruses?
8. I'm playing with the idea of getting a small UPS cause I use an extranal screen, HDD (non portable), network, printer. All of them are on surge protectors (belkin) but I heard the best way to protect against anything is (eltrical) is to get a UPS. Blackout, brown outs, spikes of all their ranges. Suggestions: $250 less. Ideally 1 hour of life full load.
9. Also, last question, I'd like to use SSH on my windows computer from work into my mac @ home from time to time, is there a way I can do that on my PC @ work, so I can access files and use VNC to control it?

This post was deleted for the following reason: As a general rule, you really need to stick to one specific question -- loading up 9 separate questions in one askme is essentially going against the spirit of guidelines. -- cortex
That's a lot of questions.
4. Use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to back up to an encrypted disk image. You won't be able to boot of these backups, but the data is otherwise accessible.
7. Software Update. Enable firewall. Don't do stupid stuff.
9. This requires your laptop being on, all the time, with sleep disabled when you're at work. Turn on SMB file sharing, Screen Sharing, and Remote Login in the sharing system preference pane.
You'll have to forward ssh (port 22) from your internet connection to your laptop. (Guide) Then, you'll need to forward (over ssh) samba (windows file sharing, port 139/445) and vnc (port 5900). (Guide)
This gets very complicated. You might want to try making a VPN instead, with say, the free version of Hamachi.

The harddrive for #3 looks fine. If you have a macbook, it's fairly easy to replace the drive. Just make sure you have a T8 Torx screwdriver and a #0 phillips screwdriver. Instructions: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Core-2-Duo/Hard-Drive-Replacement/116/5/Page-1/Battery
If you have a macbook pro, it's a considerably more involved process. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo/Hard-Drive-Replacement/115/10/Page-1/Battery
The 16mb cache is a little bit of flash memory on the harddrive that queues up reads and writes from/to the hard drive platters. This generally equates to some speed gains.

ON the security cable, I think they're all about the same. Get one that fits the Kensington security hole [you'll probably have trouble finding one that doesn't]. I wouldn't spend extra for a name brand or some sort of fancy-shmancy lock, since they are all equally vulnerable to a bolt cutter.
Mighty mouse batteries: Why wouldn't you use rechargables? I have a Targus wireless bluetooth mouse that I've got some NiMH AAAs in and it works fine.
On the hard drive. Sometimes you can save money by buying a 2.5" external drive [like maybe this one]. Take the HD out of it, swap it with the one in your laptop, and you've got an external backup drive!
