...you look pretty well fed to me (obviously).

What words and / or phrases have you consciously eliminated from your vocabulary, and why?

My examples:

"obviously": many years back I came across a quote that pointed out how teachers will always use the word without realizing the implications of its use.

"pride / proud": personal decision, I just realized long ago that, for me, there are better responses to most situations than that of pride.

"I'm starving...": seeing real starving people in the 3rd world made me a little more careful with this one.

"that's retarded...": similar reasons to starving.

I think working to eliminate such things helps me change my worldview and think harder about things, and I'd like to get more of these on my list.

What are yours?

Also, how do you politely handle it when you hear someone using one on your list without thinking about what they're saying? Do you just let it go, or do you say something? And if so, what?

This post was deleted for the following reason: This is pretty I'll-go-first chatfiltery, and the second let's-talk-words question today, which is feeling like one too many and not a great trend to let foster. You're welcome to post it you-know-where if you like. -- cortex

I'm currently trying to remove any version of "killing oneself" or "shooting oneself" from my vocab - a friend's dad just shot himself. If I slip in front of him, I'm gonna ki.....uh, feel really, really badly.
