Where to go for dinner with a vegan?

Vegan Torontonians! Have you found any restaurants with vegan options? How friendly are restaurants to requests for vegan food?
We've planned to go out to dinner tonight and want to invite a vegan friend along. We're all fine with vegetarian food, but would like to know if there are any restaurants in downtown toronto that aren't necessarily vegetarian, but treat vegans well.

Yeah, in general getting vegan food is pretty hard unless you do either a vegetarian place or somewhere ethnic like maybe Thai. Fressen is really good. You might have some luck with Rebel House which has vegetarian (and it looks like vegan) options. Ethiopian might be an option, you just have to make sure the dishes don't have butter.

For future reference, you may find that the Toronto Vegetarian Association has a lot of information, especially their directory of veggie/vegan places in Toronto.

Sadie's Diner specializes in vegan breakfast and lunch. Not a dinner place, but definitely vegan, and very cute. It's near Adelaide and Bathurst.

Fressen is good for all out vegan/vegetarian food. If you want a nice little restaurant that has a good mixture for both non-vegan/vegetarian and vegan/vegetarian alike then I highly recommend Utopia on college. It's a fairly small place, but the food and service is quite good. After, there are a tonne of places that you can get drinks.

Urban Herbivore in Kensington Market? Also, seconding Cafe 668. Heard good things about Bo De Duyen and King's Cafe also. I'm not personally a big Fresh fan. Full disclosure - I'm not vegan/vegetarian, so

Commensal is somewhat popular in Montreal and I saw one on Bay and Elm Street in TO the last time I was there. It is all vegetarian though.
I don't know what it is like in your city, but in MTL it is buffet style, but you pay for the weight of your food (minus the plate). The wife and I love it (we are not vegetarians) - the chocolate mousse cake is to die for!
