Who wants a gmail account?

I have two invites - basically I can give away two accounts since I already have one - and I don't know what to do with them. I know there's been some interest around here in getting one, so the first two people to email me (email in profile) can have one.

Response by poster: I was kind of hoping that would happen, but the invites don't seem to show up automatically; supposedly, they were there when I first got the account, and then they showed up again today, seemingly in everyone's gmail account.

If they are there, though, that would be cool.

I would gladly accept any offer of an invitation, with the intention of spreading the love. It's too late for a gmail account to mark me as a member of the cool kids club, but it'd certainly be nice to have access to mail from work.

I had two invites so I gave one to a friend and for kicks I thought I'd auction the other. well, the darn thing ended at $112.50! pretty absurd. I almost felt bad taking the money. ALMOST!

I don't get it.

I started my gmail account a few weeks ago, and today got another invite.

However, I cannot sign up for a second a/c - eg, for my daughter. Gmail knows i have one - I have to give it my blogger details.

So how do you guys get valid extra invites? Hmmm?

Perhaps those who get them can either use their gmail address in their profile or put a note in their profile saying they got one, so people can easily figure out who to send their invites to.

Oh well, thanks for thinking of the mefites, milovoo. I'm still grateful. Hopefully as people cycle through gmail's server they'll post here and continue passing the favor around. So what's the best way to go about this? If we just hold forth in this one thread will there be enough visibility to be noticed by those with accounts? It'd be nice to have gmail.whores.metafilter.com, but I doubt that'll come down the pipe anytime soon. So, I hope people will keep checking this thread.

Does anybody know what to do if you get more invitations that you need? I got one last night through Gmail Swap yet I think some kind MeFier sent me an invite before I could take myself off the list. If I just don't respond to it, does that mean it goes back to them and they can use it to somebody else? Or can I just forward the e-mail on to some other deserving person?

My understanding, based on almost nothing, is that once the invite has been sent, it is out of your hands. On my end, I see a link at the top of my gmail inbox that says "invite a friend" Clicking that sends me to a page where I have to enter a firstname/lastname combo and an email address with the option to add a personalized message and then the folks at gmail email out an invite to that person with a link they click to sign up. That's it. One of the reasons it's tough to hand out gmail accounts in this AskMe fashion is that if, say, me and mathowie both send you an invite at the same time, you can accept them both, but you can't accept one invite and return the other one, though you may be able to pass it on [looks like yes according to vacapinta]. So, in order to maximize usefulness, there needs to be some sort of way to make sure that an invite isn't sent to someone who already got one. I leave it to you fine people to figure out what that mechanism should be.

I asked the fellas at Gmail. As long as the double invitee doesn't click on both URLs in the emails you sent, the extra URL can be sent to anyone to redeem.

jessamyn, also if you are the inviter, you can see the email that was 'sent' with the link inside in your sentbox.

So, if you change your mind or sent it to the wrong email etc. you can, as the inviter, re-purpose that email as well..

Someone (not on mefi) actually tried to invite me yesterday, and the invite has yet to show up in my box. I trust that he really sent it. He was speculating that maybe I haven't gotten it because google was putting a delay on the invites the way that they put a delay on orkut invites a while back. But this thread makes me doubt that theory.

Can anyone verify that they received an invite at a yahoo email address, recently, soon after it was sent?

bingo, it is known that invites sent to yahoo have been going into the bulkmail folder. have you checked there?

if not, as i mentioned above, have them look in their sent box and re-send that email to another address or just cut-paste the url for you into IM :)

My blog (two posts; mainly a dump for ridiculous memoirs as I remember them/have the time to write and post them) was probably not active enough to receive the Blogger invite.

I wish I had something cool to trade for this. The only thing of marginal value that I'm willing to give away is a copy of The Beatles' "Help!" on DVD. If this is still going--one good procedure might be that, if you're on the list, you already have a gmail account, and you receive a spare invite, then you should just forward that invite to the person immediately beneath you on the list.

For those of you keeping track at home, I've extended three offers, heard back from one person, and the other two of you people need to get on the stick or I'm going to give the invitation away out from under you!

I finally got invites of my own to give out and zapped them off to random people on The Mighty List. The list is updated to remove people I'm certain have received the g-love - either because they've emailed me to tell them so, posted here about it or changed their email address in their profile to @gmail. If you're still on the list but already have gmail, drop me a line at jacquilynne at gmail to let me know and I'll take you off.

Also, blindcarboncopy, danelope, precocious, if you're still reading this, and still seeking gmail, it may be because you've neither made your address visible in your profile, nor posted it in any of your posts to this thread.

GAH! Long story short I just lost my ISP, so my email changed in the last twenty four hours. If anybody tried to forward me an invite, I apologize. My new email is on my user page. So if anyone is still out there, please, please, please think of ol'elwood, mired in the slums of a yahoo email account.

That is to say, I'd be an eternal meta-friend if someone hooks me up!

lnicole - yup, my email got tanked at the most critical moment. I've been a happy earthlink customer for a few years, but my billing got fouled up and they turned me off. I did manage to sort out the whole deal after extensive phone calls to earthlink and my bank, but in the end I was so frustrated I told them to cancel the account. I thought they'd let me go till the end of the month, but nooooo. Now I missed my chance to email like the cool kids! So now I have the yahoo account which I'll keep until I get hooked up. I'll be getting a new ISP in the next few days, but I'll hold that email aside to avoid further confusion.

*sobs*
what really hurts is this mess is all my fault for moving bank accounts around and not updating with earthlink.

I like jacquilynne's list and appreciate all the hard work, but there has to be an easier way to track all this. I have invites too, and we may have more than enough to meet actual expressed demand...if we could find all of it. It's also hard to know who's been covered and who hasn't.

Since I've never wiki'd before, I decided to post at the MeFi Gmail Wiki. Perhaps that might be a better way to go? When we send an invite, we can amend the "Wanted" list to say one was sent and by whom?

I think the wiki is working for this. I gave my two out, and moved folks from "Those who need an invitation" to "Pending Invitations." If someone doesn't reply, I can always move 'em back and try and "adopt" someone else.

Just refreshing the page now and then shows things are turning over nicely. There are almost as many invites than requests (more invites, if you don't count the recycled list).
