poster for my boyfriends office
November 12, 2007 12:02 PM

My boyfriend got a cool promotion but he's keeping the same office so I want to celebrate by giving him a new framed poster. Please suggest some good places where I could order one online. (The poster, not the frame.)

My boyfriend's kind of on the geeky-techy side, and also loves to travel and to look at the stars and such, so I'd like to get him something that he'll love to look at while he's working.

I already saw this thread, and I liked the Brilliant Earth poster that someone suggested, but since the office is more on the elegant side, I'd like to find something that looks more like art and less like something ordered from a science magazine.

OK this isn't exactly what you're asking for, but I can't help but bet there might be a nice screenprinted gigposter that addresses the stars/techy side of things? Gigposter printers do all sorts of random subjects for some of their venues. Of course you might not want some random show information on it-- but it still makes for some awesome art.

It'll take some searching through though-- here at gigposters.com is a good start. Extra bonus-- screenprinting will make it look more elegant/fineart than a typical poster might.

Not the theme you asked for, but I can't help suggesting Despair.

Depending on his sense of humor (and his boss'), he'll love it.

Thanks, adamrice, but yeah, thats a very good example of what I DON'T want to get him. This is a poshy kind of company that makes real estate developments and such.

I have the perfect thing. Really.

Get the Salyut 6 cosmonaut's cyclogram, a beautiful study of good information presentation. This was made by a man to cope with the stress and confusion of whizzing around the earth many times per day.

"Handmade by a Russian cosmonaut, Georgi Grechko, this cyclogram shows a 96-day flight of Salyut 6. Some 22 parallel time-series show 1500 sunrises and 1500 sunsets during the flight, a schedule for space walks and baths, and visits of resupply ships bringing equipment, fresh fruit, and gingerbread. Printed in six colors on fine paper, 36” by 20”."

Time-exposure poster of Polaris. It's geeky, it has stars, and (more importantly) it's absolutely beautiful.

I've got fractal posters that I think are a cut above the usual rainbow palette mandelbrot stuff.

Any of these?

Or this (I personally own this in 20x30 and it looks really fantastic, and not so formulaic as planet+moons+landscape type pictures).

Or just pretty, this.

Dan McCarthy does some spectacular art prints and gigposters, many of which have an astronomical theme to them.

Unfortunately, most of his art prints and posters sell out really fast, but you can often find them on eBay and in the Gigposters Classifieds.

I own around 20 McCarthy pieces, and they never fail to amaze me with thier stark beauty.

Maybe he'd like a replica of the Time Bandits map?

Looks like this super spectacular McCarthy print, which looks different when the lights are turned out is available on eBay, either at a current bid of $102.50, or as a Buy It Now! for $350.

I can personally attest that it's an incredible print.

The Pillars of Creation? I think it's very classy, and it's an actual picture from Hubble. More here.

I love Lunch atop a Skyscraper even though it's not stars and stuff, I find myself looking at it over and over. Might even fit thematically into a real estate development kind of office. My boss has it in 4 feet by 6 feet. You can get vertigo if you look at it too long.

Instead of a framed poster, how about wall stickers?

Patterns & Shapes from Tonky
Or a lot of awesome stuff from Blik

Thanks everyone, I'm talking a look at all of these.

If everyone can think of more places where I can find something, keep the suggestions coming.
