Online VPN/Network storage
November 10, 2007 5:12 PM

I'm looking for an online file share, but with some very specific, and apparently hard to find, features.

So, right now, I do work on no less than 4 PC's (2 desktop, 2 laptop). I'm looking for a online file share that my computers can treat as a local drive. My current thoughts include a VPN and network drive mapping. Google-fu fails me. Are there any such services?I'd ideally like to point things like Outlook's database file and the My Documents folder out there.

Search through the archives of Lifehacker; I found this there.

How big are your files? There are ways of using a google account as a local file system.

Take a look at Jungle Disk.

I haven't treid it, but it gets pretty good reviews.

I've looked at LEAF; not entirely comfortable with the third party VPN... have had bad experiences with those in the past. File size, typically no more than 1-2 Meg. At times, might be trying to push significantly large files through. The ideal solution that I'm envisioning is a filehost somewhere that will allow me to authenticate in , and charge a monthly fee for the storage. Dynamic IP's are the only thing stopping me from putting said host on one of my desktops.

Why don't you just register at www.dyndns.com?

Was not aware of dyndns.com. That seems to solve it.

Create a drive accessing a gmail account. Access said drive from any pc you want. Not the fastest solution in the world, but it does work (or at least it used to, when i did it a year or so ago)

For what it's worth, the hacked WRT/Tomato firmwares allow you to do Dynamic DNS nameserving automatically w/o running the local client. I do this with Tomato on my WRT54G, but I use www.no-ip.com.
