A General Colon Pow-Wow
October 22, 2007 6:16 PM

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good and attentive gastroenterologist in the D.C. or Maryland area. One that specializes in Crohn's would be excellent.

After being rescheduled and "bounced" through multiple appointments, not to mention being generally pushed about by his old GI doctor--my soon-to-be-husband is looking for a new G.I. doctor.

Ideally he'd like one of the doctors at GW Hospital, or between Chevy Chase and Rockville. After the crappitude of the last doctor, we'd really like a personal review before engaging with a new one.

I don't know if he specializes in Crohn's, but I would recommend Dr. Alan Diamond in Silver Spring. He did a great job of being competent and having a good bedside manner when I saw him a year ago. I don't have any chronic condition, so I'm not a regular on the gastro circuit, but I'd put him among the top few specialists I've had to visit.

The practice is well run (in contrast to too many other doctor's offices these days) and the docs use tablet PCs (which just seemed more professional). There were quite a few old folks waiting to see various doctors in the office (not sure if that's common among gastro practices).

He's right off route 29, slightly east of your target location.

Here's how my HMO lists him:

I have Crohn's, and I go to Dr. Richard Ranard (link). He's been the best for me. He's in Fairfax, VA though (near the Dunn Loring Metro Station), so that might be too far for you.

Dr. Martin Prosky at Arlington Hospital Center.

I cannot speak highly enough of him. He also works closely with Dr. Othon Wiltz, colo-rectal surgeon to the stars, should we need to have an operation.

(By the way, if anyone trolls past this thread of mine on their own search for a GI doctor--feel free to drop me an email if you want to know which doctor we found to be completely useless. I don't want to totally smear him by posting his name here, really.)
