Best way to rip video from a DVD into MPEG or AVI? I need to grab scenes from a movie and monkey with them in Premiere (Windows).

If you want to monkey with Premiere, DiVX and XVid are not the way to go- Premiere hates them, I don't know why, but it's a known bug.

I use SmartRipper to get the VOB files, DVDtoAVI to convert the VOB files to AVI, then TMPGenc to convert the monstrous AVI files into manageable MPGs. You can actually use the AVI files just fine in Premiere; they're just really big so conversion to MPG makes them more manageable.

Files and guide here.

headspace, I've done something similar in the past except I used DVD2AVI's frameserving capability to eliminate the intermediate step. You can open the VOB files with DVD2AVI and serve video data directly to TMPGEnc without actually creating the huge AVI files.

Ooooh, no kidding? I am going to have to give that a try, that would save me a world of pain in the butt! Thanks, hashashin!
