Did I dream this 80s movie about a guy who died and came back to reconnect with his wife?

I'm looking for a movie I saw in the early 80s on cable - about a guy who dies and then is returned to Earth and tries to reconnect with his wife.
OK, it's not "Somewhere in Time" and not that movie about the football player. But this movie was sort of artsy where a guy dies and goes to heaven (I remember white flowing robes) and his "handler" allows him to go back to earth and win back his wife (but of course she doesn't know it's him).
Who knows? Maybe I dreamed it...

Unless that's the movie you mean by "that movie about the football player".

Defending Your Life was 1991 but I consider the "80's" to be from 1978 to 1992 or so.

Also, come to think of it, I think in Defending Your Life he falls in love with someone in heaven, rather than tries to smooth things over with his wife. Who remembers though.

I'm going to guess Always with Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and Audrey Hepburn. It came out in 1989, so I may be peeing in the breeze here....

Ok, I had some of the details wrong. It was more mid-80s than early 80s. And I guess it wasn't his wife but it was a woman he met in Heaven. Cool....

I too was going to guess Chances Are. It sounds much more like what you described initially.
