The best puzzle/RPG hybrid videogames?
May 20, 2007 4:42 PM

Looking for more puzzle/RPG hybrids!

I know the genre is only just developing, but maybe there are some titles I'm missing out on. If you're not familiar, these are casual games with RPG elements added. I loved Bookworm Adventures and Puzzle Quest, what else is out there?

Puzzle Pirates? I don't know how "casual" it is; some people get seriously hooked on it.

Puzzle Pirates is definitely in the "casual" genre; I've played for a while and recommend it. The roleplaying element is a bit limited--most of the puzzle games also perform actions, like fixing a ship or filling guns, but you don't get a story that unfolds, or skills you level up, or other tropes of the RPG genre. It's very open-ended. My recommendation is that if you do try it, start a character on a doubloon ocean--you'll have access to all of the puzzles immediately, and you don't have to pay anything (as long as you don't want the nicer stuff, like different clothing or your own ship.) You can download the client here.

Tower of the Sorcerer plays a lot like a normal RPG, but it's different in that every battle has a set outcome depending on what stats you have going into it. Nothing is random. Might not be as casual as you want, though.

If you have a Nintendo DS, you need to check out Puzzle Quest - Challenge of the Warlords. It's an RPG that uses a game very much like Bejeweled for battles.
