Schematic for DIY sequential shift lights?

Can anyone hook me up with a schematic for a DIY sequential shift light set up?

My friend is building up a '95 BMW 318ti into a full on race car. He's completely gutted the electrical system and is getting ready to drop in an M54 3.0 liter six and re-wire it.

He'd like to put in sequential LED shift lights into the gauge cluster, but isn't really happy with the ones commercially available because they're either ugly, proprietary, or cost a shit-ton of money for what is essentially $5 in parts from Radioshack.

Can anyone hook me up with a schematic for a DIY set up?

No answers for a whole three hours ... so I'll go in and say there's tons of people who are more likely to be able to help you if you explain how exactly this is supposed to light up and what signals are available to it. A link to a commercial product could help.

Yep, we need more info..... what sort of trans is he installing? Is he going to use an ECM for the engine? There are few ways to do this.....

Personally, I just use my ear and my intuition to shift when I race my Miata........

There are also several after-market tachometers that have shift lights built in as well and are fully programmable.....

"Ugly?" Is he gonna race the car or put it in beauty contests?

I'd just get a cheap autometer shift light, but i admire your DIY moxie.
