Is selflinking ever ok?

If I create and link to a gallery on my server/website, I understand that it would be a selflink. Are there exceptions to this rule?
There have been times I would like to ffp where the subject is mainly images. One I have not posted yet, but would like to, is a particular topic located at the Library of Congress with a library of over 1600 color photos and over 115,000 b&w. Of the color, there are perhaps 100 or so that are noteworthy and pertaining to my subject; also, that part of the site is not easily searched/viewed. What I would like to do is edit the library and download and then upload the appropriate images to a gallery for ease of use. If I create a gallery on my server/website, I understand that it would be a selflink. Are there exceptions to this rule, as in the case I'm mentioning, and if not, what is the alternative? Flickr is not acceptable to me.

This post was deleted for the following reason: this goes to metatalk but the short answer is "no"
Make a post in projects and ask someone to post it. No exceptions at all ,that I am aware of.

Maybe someone reading this question will offer to FPP it for you, but no, there are no exceptions to self-linking.

IANAL, but if I were you, I'd be pretty careful about using copied materials from the LoC, without express written permission. Many of the items in the LoC collections were donated with specific conditions on re-use or display by third parties. Unless you have pre-clearance from the LoC, copying or hosting such materials for public viewing can be a DMCA violation.

"my subject" makes it sound like you're writing us an essay, not linking to something cool on the web. If you can't make it work in that format, it shouldn't be an FPP at all.

As hortense says, if it's really that interesting, put it in Projects.
There is only one cardinal sin on MetaFilter, and self-linking is it.
Thou shall not self-link, ever, or thou shall be smiteth and cast asunder; henceforth your ruins shall make the foundation walls for the urinals of the MetaFilter gift shoppe.
There's more, but that's the basic gist.

I thought there were two cardinal sins. THe one you mention, and this one:
If your question is regarding MetaFilter, MetaTalk, or Ask MetaFilter, please post it to MetaTalk.

Hope I don't steal your thunder, sluglicker, but with the numbers you've listed, I think the photos, if not your particular subject, have already been posted ("color" link) twice (second is the exhibition selected from the collection at the first link). And to help you navigate the full collection, there's a greasemonkey script that surfaced when the collection hit boingboing two Septembers ago.

Whoops...that "full collection" link only goes to the color photos. Black and white here

Not in a "omg get out of our askmez" kind of way, but in a, "I think that you're going to get better answers over there" kind of way.
