Stop TIVO Stop!

My TIVO is possessed. Pushing the directional arrows no longer moves it one space in that direction, but starts it moving that way and then keeps going! This is seriously hampering my TIVO watching.

We thought maybe it was the remote, but we tried changing the batteries and even taking out the batteries after it started going a direction, neither affected it, it just kept going in that direction. The TIVO is a series 2 and only about 1 year old. This is really driving me crazy!

You'll probably have better luck asking over at TivoCommunity.com. If anyone can help you, it will be them.

Maybe the guts of the remote are broken.

A damaged (liquid always a good culprit) remote behaves this way. It sounds like you need to replace your remote.

If you're feeling adventurous, you might be able to pop the remote open and clean it out. I did this last week. Remove the screw at the bottom of the battery port, and using a flathead screwdriver, pop open the seam along the side of the remote. When done, you can clean the silicone button panel and the contacts underneath.

The only catch I found with this is that you may slightly mar the plastic along the seam when trying to pry it apart. I filed down the sharp edges with a nail file.

Even if you screw it up horribly, you'll be no worse off than you are now, and you can just order a new remote.

If you have a DIY streak in you, you can try to repair it yourself before you shell out the cash for a new one.

Oddly enough, it turned out to be that something was pressing a button on the DVD remote and that was interfering with the signal somehow. Apparently this happens frequently. Thanks though!
