Editing and feedback communities.
June 12, 2006 1:58 PM

Looking for resources and communities that help edit written work and offer feedback. I am looking for assistance with all forms of writing, such as poetry, essays, and short stories. I would of course be willing to offer my own feedback for other people's work. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I can't vouch for it personally, but I have a lot of writer friends who rave about the virtual studios at Zoetrope.

Fictionslamming over at LJ is actually quite the well-balanced, interesting community.

Critique Circle is worth a look, I've had some great critiques from there.

There are essay editing services like EssayEdge, but I think they charge out the wazoo.

There was a thread recently about exactly the same question -- there might be additional resources there, if you can find it.

I believe I mentioned afterdinner in the last thread. Sadly, the domain no longer seems to be resolving for me, so I guess it's defunct.

I can't discourage you enough to avoid Zoetrope. Their members are, for the most part, idiot manchildren and women. Years ago, I had some stuff up there (and my stuff is pretty tame), and I got called all kinds of names on their forums, including Pornographer and Pedophile (I shit you not). One member even threatened to call the police to have me investigated because, he claimed, someone who wrote about sex as often as I did had to be breaking some sort of sex-related law. They're a bunch of troglodytes there.

I haven't been into TWB in a while and can't remember if they do short stories or just screenplays, but they were a hell of a lot better than Zoe.

There is now a Metafilter Writer's Group, but it's only just started so I can't vouch for the quality.
