Why won’t this lens work with my Fujifilm x-pro1 digital camera?

Back in 2018 I bought a Fujifilm x-pro1 camera with a 23mm lens from a friend. It works great, but I got busy with other life stuff and really never used the camera like I wanted to. Recently, I pulled it off the shelf and decided I wanted to try a smaller profile lens to make it a little more portable. But this new lens — a TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 — won’t focus in either auto or manual focus mode.
I wasn’t sure if the 27mm was the right second lens for me, so I decided to give the cheaper TTArtisan a shot so I wasn’t throwing a lot of money at it as I experimented. But it won’t focus at all - I get a red !AF warning on the display if I try it on autofocus, and if I switch it to manual, turning the focus ring moves the line on the focus distance display on the LCD screen but nothing actually changes in the lens - everything is still blurry.
Before I return this lens, what am I missing? I see other people on the internet have used this combo successfully so I have to assume user error. But even with the camera on autofocus, auto everything (aperture, ISO, etc) I can’t get it to focus. The other lens works fine with the same settings.
I’ve tried it in all kinds of light and I updated the camera’s firmware in case that would help, but no dice. The lens “manual” for the TT is nothing; it doesn’t have any troubleshooting or instructions.
I doubt anyone here has this specific combo of camera and lens but I’ll take anything I can get in terms of things to try. I’d prefer to not have to deal with a return if I can get this to work!

Good thought - definitely everything on the box and the inside of the back lens cover all say it’s the x-mount connection. It feels like a solid click into place.

A quick google found this less than satisfying reddit thread that suggests a few things you could try.

Have you tried setting the camera to the "shoot without lens" setting?

I have that lens and tried it on both an x-a3 and an x-t50. It worked on both. Highly suggest doing the ttartisan lens upgrade. And while you're at it making sure the x pro is up to date as well. I do not have to set "shoot without lens" setting.
Couple dumb questions. How are you setting af/mf? (in menu or with mcs dial on face? Is the camera AFing with another lens? And when you say it won't mf how are you focusing (turning ring on lens itself, not the aperture ring I presume?).

I’ve decided to return the lens, thanks to that Reddit thread srboisvert posted.
To answer the other questions, I am setting af/mf with the dial on the face. The camera auto (and manual) focuses with the Fuji 23mm lens with no issues. And yes, I’m using the focus ring not the aperture ring to try to mf, but that’s not a bad question given how new I am to this, haha.
I already updated the firmware on the camera - I was sure that was the issue and was so disappointed when it didn’t work! I couldn’t get the lens firmware to download (and have seen other people post that it doesn’t work with Macs which is what I have.)
Haven’t decided if I’ll buy the Fuji version or just keep playing with my 23mm. Now taking suggestions for what lenses you like best/use most! Most of my photos are likely to be indoor pics of my pets, street photography of all kinds, and some nature/travel photography.

- Check for any brand name on the lens - did the vendor for sure ship you the compatible one? If it says anything other than Fuji or XPro it might be a product mixup. (Looks like you did order correctly - but maybe there was a fulfillment error?)
- see how it mounts compared to your working lens - does the 27mm click firmly with the exact same feel? Does the physical mount interface exactly match with the 23mm?
If yes to both, I would personally chalk up the lens itself as defective and return (anything more complicated than a mechanical troubleshoot is above my pay grade).
Curious if you find more specific info from others though!
