Netflix/Tubi recommendations
December 17, 2024 1:20 PM
I’m recovering from Covid and very bored.
As you might notice from my fanfare history, I’ve torn through a few shows and movies.
I’m looking for some fresh recommendations to help me break through the stuff that Netflix has decided I must surely want to watch.
Some things I've enjoyed on Netflix:
Lupin
Derby Girls
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Man on the Inside
The Umbrella Academy
Enola Holmes
Wednesday
Good luck!

We are currently doing a re-watch of Kim's Convenience. It is sitcom that is funny but also warm - the family all cares about each other and nothing really bad ever happens.

BoJack Horseman and Disenchanted. Individual episodes are amusing, but both have storylines that build up over time.

One thing I like about Tubi is that unlike many other streaming services (like Netflix) they still allow you to easily browse by categories and genres. So you can find interesting stuff by selecting, say, the "actors turned directors" collection and there's just a whole list of films you might never have known existed, from Gary Sinise's version of Of Mice And Men to a bunch of Buster Keaton silent comedies to a 1968 comedy western (The Scalphunters) directed by Sidney Pollack.
Not necessarily recommending those particular flicks - well, the Buster Keaton films, absolutely - just a reminder that Tubi still allows you to stumble upon things maybe better than most other services.
They also seem to have a very high percentage of non-US films. So if you've ever wondered "what's up with this Bollywood thing anyway?" there's a whole collection of films. During the lockdowns I wound up watching a bunch of Russian-made movies set in World War 2 that mostly didn't suck, just because I stumbled upon them cruising around Tubi.

If you're into classic TV, Tubi has The Saint and Columbo (plus Family (Fanfare) and Soap).
ParaNorman, the Boxtrolls, and Coraline are all good - pretty sure those are all Laika productions. Oh, even Missing Link was pretty good.
As soundguy99 pointed out, Tubi does have a few (semi-)good recommendation categories - Award Winners and Nominees shows they actually have Wonka right now! Huh. There's also Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes; Moonstruck could be a decent option.
Hope you feel better soon!
