Timesless Wordle
November 4, 2024 3:41 PM

The New York Times Tech Guild is on strike. They have stated that Games and Cooking are behind the picket line, and have asked people to stop using those until the strike is resolved. (Regular news coverage is not behind the picket line.) What game can my family Wordle text message group substitute for Wordle during this interregnum. We are all agreed we do not want to cross the picket line.

I like quordle, which is four wordle-type games played simultaneously.

Yep, quordle is great, too.

Britannica just expanded their Octordle (solve 8 wordles at once) options: daily options for "chill," "daily" (medium), and "extreme," plus "practice."

The original, pre-NYT Wordle is still available via the internet archive.

If you're up for something a bit different, allow me to introduce you to Murdle.

Eightile is a fun one (unscrambling 5 words in sequence - each one letter longer than the last and all built on a single 3-letter word).

Waffle is good too (grid of unscrambling).

I really enjoy Squaredle and do it every day but it takes a bit longer (and, alas, doesn't give you an emoji grid).

worldle (a geography game)

Duotrigordle, which is a whole lot of wordle all at once.

Puzzmo has a fun variety of daily games. It doesn't have a game quite like Wordle, but Typeshift is an interesting word-based puzzle. (Your daily score is based on a combination of how quickly you finish and the number of words you use to finish — fewer is better.)

Timeguessr
Redactle

Both these do require more of a time investment.

I really enjoyed Absurdle: like Wordle but it hates you.
(discovered here previously, made by mefi's own qntm)

Thank you for this Ask, which is the first I've heard of the strike. Farewell to my 175-day NYT Crossword streak, darnit!

(And, sorry, with more thought: Absurdle is not really suitable for group play. However the thanks stand. )

I play games on Puzzmo and also picked up mefi's own gisnep a few months back.

Alphaguess!! Fun because (as far as I know) there's no fail state, so instead you can compete with each other either on # of guesses or time, or both.

Absurdle is not really suitable for group play. However the thanks stand.

Absurdle's good for groups as long as everyone uses the same start word. I've normally done it with the start word from that day's Wordle, but obviously that's not appropriate. Taking it in turns for a family group would work great.

Or if qntm's reading, an Absurdle of the day would be fantastic.

Seconding Gisnep and adding Word Solitaire. I do both of these daily and find that doing so has entirely supplanted my motivation to go Wordling.

Incidentally, today's 48 seconds for Gisnep was a personal best :-)

There are several Wordle variations named Wurdle (with a "u"), but this one is a clone of the original.
