Help me find a very specific type of sock
November 4, 2024 3:13 PM

My child has outgrown her favorite brand of socks (sorry for the Amazon link; we purchase elsewhere whenever possible) and my efforts to find a comparable pair of socks in a larger size have failed. She has sensory sensitivities so I am hoping I can find something closer to the particular fabric blend of these socks, which is 45% Wool, 40% Polyester, 15% Spandex. Does anyone have any leads or magic ways to search? Thank you!

I found these on Amazon by searching for "45% wool 40% polyester sock" on Amazon. They were one of the first hits for me, but an awful lot of the results were not even close. In the details it says fits US Women shoe size 5-10. Good luck! I am very particular about how socks feel on my feet, and I usually have to go through a lot of try-ons and returns before I find something that doesn't drive me up a wall.

The price may be a non-starter for you, but Bombas merino socks are really nice. They're more wool and less polyester (79% Merino Wool 19% Polyester 2% Elastane, at the wooliest but it seems to vary a bit my color), but I have a few and they don't feel scratchy at all. Toe seams in socks are often a sensory issue, and these are great on that front, and they tend to stay in place really well without bunching up or sliding around. I've been extremely happy with all of mine, and they've lasted well. They do offer refunds even on socks that have been worn, so you can give them a real try before committing to the price.

I did not search the site, but this company has a LOT of socks:

Have you tried DarnTough?

They're something like 45% Merino Wool, 50% Nylon, and 5% Spandex. Because Nylon is softer than Polyester (and because Merino Wool is an extra soft type of wool), you might end up with a similar feel overall. Also, you can pick a style with "cushioning", meaning soft terry loops underfoot. They feel really good. Well made, no annoying seams, snug, stay up. The prices seem insane for a pair of socks, but they come with a lifetime warranty, and it's really easy to use. You send in a picture of socks in need of repair, and they'll send you a voucher for any new pair, free, no shipping. They will also do this if you tried them out and just don't like them (if they're reasonably new).

I am not a sockbroker.

No recommendations, but wanted to note that the too small socks have seamless toes, which I bet is also a part of the appeal for a sensory kid.

I find Bombas and Stance to be much softer than DarnTough. And fewer issues with seams.
