Resistance Band Workouts
September 6, 2024 7:43 PM

What are your favorite resistance band workouts, on YouTube or otherwise?

I bought a set of resistance bands because I didn’t have room in our house for weights. But now I’m not using them because I don’t know where to begin.

I’m not looking to build a ton of muscle; I just want to build upper body strength a bit and maintain it as I get older. (I’m early forties and male; I’ve always had very strong legs—caddying will do that—but never been that great about arm and chest lifts.) So in general I’m looking for something on the chill side rather than the CrossFit “lift ’til you puke” side. Yoga With Adrienne is very much my vibe, for example.

So while I’m generally not a huge YouTube guy, I think some routines from YouTube would help me build the habit. What are your favorite routines, and if there are things you like elsewhere, definitely send those along as well.

I don't know any workouts but having almost blinded a friend recently when a resistance band I was using busted, I'd say regularly inspect them and also wear goggles of some kind! No joke.

I like doing pallof presses, which I started doing in PT for my back. Also chest band pulls like this and these hip abduction things.

A wealth of creative workouts on this site, and a few that focus on resistance bands, like this and this.

I have been using this Denise Austin dvd since 2004...seriously, best ever. It's broken up into segments that are available individually on YouTube:
Cardio (~20 min)
Upper Body (~10 min)
Lower Body (~10 min)

One of the things I like about these segments is that you can do the workouts with anything from no band/lightest resistance (beige?) all the way up to the highest resistance band (green, I think?) depending on where you are in your workout needs. I recommend working out in front of a mirror to check your form if you can. In the upper and lower body strength-training segments, Denise steps aside to point out specific form and alignment tips which is great if you're new to those kinds of movements. Just because they are bands doesn't mean they won't do as much damage as regular weights if you aren't using good form.
