Guitar apps for a 6-year old?
August 6, 2024 4:18 AM

Have a little lad who is trying to play a guitar, child sized classic with nylon strings. Are there good gamified apps for small kids? Not too expensive please, and maybe not too "little kid" music. Also interested in sports and Lego if that's anything that intersects.

You should try Note Rush.

My kiddo was borderline obsessed with Simply Piano at age 5. The 'Simply' app is now a whole suite of music learning modules, including guitar, singing, (and even drawing?). We've only dabbled with the guitar part and from the app perspective, it's just as good, but note detection over the mic is necessarily a bit less accurate than using MIDI input from a keyboard.

The pedagogy is basically sound, and it's fun. You can pick which skills to focus on in lessons/drills, as well as learn to play various famous/popular songs. Each song can be "learned" at a variety of skill levels too, which is nice. My only small complaints are that it's a bit pricey (and a subscription model to boot), and that the catalogue is overly focused on recent top40 and Disney stuff (I hate that crap but ofc it may be a boon to others). There are still a variety of songs from folk, show tunes, classical, classic rock, grunge, etc., and it's not at all limited to "kid's music".

I'd say check out the free tier/trial mode for sure, and the cost will likely be worth it if the kid is willing to put in the time with it, and especially if you/they have any interest in the piano/singing/drawing parts. If multiple people use it for multiple modules, then the yearly cost is pretty reasonable in terms of what you get.
